Here are my top ten tips for losing weight in college. Implement as many as you can and you will surely see results. Your body will be thanking you shortly.
1. Simplify your meals
One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to drop weight is over complicating it. Pick out some simple and healthy meals that you will enjoy and eat them over and over. I eat avocado toast for breakfast regularly, but I vary my lunch and dinner a little more. Overall, I have about 13 simple meals that I rotate.
2. Walk more
Walking is one of the most underrated exercises in the world. It’s sad that people even consider it exercising. Walking should just be normal. Walk to class instead of taking the shuttle. Walk to the football game. Finding times to walk instead of using other transportation will increase your overall health and help you shed the extra weight.
3. Drink more water
Drinking water is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your health. After all, we are about 60% water ourselves. When you drink an adequate amount of water, you will not be as hungry as you were before drinking you started hydrating properly. Up your water intake and watch the weight slide right off.
4. Share with friends
When you are having a meal, especially something that you shouldn’t be eating, share it with your friends. The idea here is not to sabotage your friends health but to eat in moderation. A little bit of a bad thing is better that gorging on treats.
5. Cut back on fried food
Cutting back on fried foods can be tough. I love me some french fries! It’s tough but you can do it. Don’t cut them all the way out or you’ll feel deprived. Cutting back is a safe bet that will yield great results. All things in moderation. You body can handle a little bit of fried food. The less you have, the more your body can focus on other things like shedding your winter weight.
6. Have a cheat day
Cheat days are my favorite. Now I’m at the point where I eat clean six days a week and cheat a little bit on the seventh. I got to the point where I don’t look forward to cheat day as much as I did when I first started. Eventually you’ll get used to your new lifestyle and it’ll become fun. Until then, feel free to eat that fast food you’ve been craving on your cheat day.
7. Find a partner
Have a friend or loved one join you on your new lifestyle change. Having a buddy helps hold you accountable. If you’re going at it alone, it can be easy to slack off or even quit all together. But when your best friend is there every step of the way, going through the same challenges, you won’t want to let them down. This is incredibly powerful.
8. Explore new healthy restaurants
This is a fun one! One of the hardest things about eating healthier is figuring out what to eat. After years of eating the same old unhealthy food, it can be tough to just start cooking healthy. Well, if you go eat at new healthy restaurants then you’ll pick up some new meal ideas. That’s where I got the idea for avocado toast!
9. Set a goal and reward yourself
Goals are extremely powerful. When we set a goal, our brain will work on achieving it all day long, even when we sleep. By setting a goal, you’ll have a measurable target to work towards. It’ll give your lifestyle new meaning. Maybe you want to drop 25 lbs, or maybe you want to cut 4 inches off your waistline. Whichever it may be, be sure to reward yourself when you reach your goal. Buy yourself that new pair of shoes you’ve been eyeing!
10. Cut back on animal products
This is a hard one, but can expedite the weight loss process by a long shot. Animal products are very fatty and unhealthy. In America, heart disease is the number one cause of death, claiming over 600,000 lives every year (1). This is because of how much meat and dairy we eat. Plant based foods don’t contribute to bad cholesterol. It’s just animal foods.
If you cut back or eliminate animal foods from your diet, you’ll be surprised at how the weight just falls off. And of course there’s the added benefit of saving the lives of millions of animals. I won’t go into detail about the treatment of animals at CAFOs, but you can learn about CAFOs by clicking the link.
